ARTIST STATEMENT The human species is quite inquisitive and curious by nature. Though the time we have witnessed our urge to justify, rationalize and explain our existence and being. May be that is the reason we philosophise and even fight to believe in our beliefs. We also have understood our confusion and desperation at not being able to explain or rationalize & justify certain phenomena or concepts, which still eludes our ability to grasp or understand them. We think we can explain life as a whole, and have even tried to create it artificially, but still, we fail to understand its mysteries, its ambiguous nature, as it doesn't seem to have built upon our ever reliable platforms of reason or logic. We experience a feeling of loss, at not being able to have successfully conquered it. It is during this loss we try to come up with an explanation which is colourful, surreal and magical but not scientific and logical. It is through this defeat that we have learnt to understand and appreciate life much better. Space is the factor which gives any sculpture its feeling of ‘being’ with dimension. And also, Space is how we distinguish ourselves from the other; we occupy our own possible space and try holding on to it as long as possible. Through this sculptural installation, I have tried to involve my notion of space with the element of a narrative. The narrative being a possibility of dialogue. The arrangement is such that, when one enters this space, the focus turns immediately towards a shiny gilded egg which commands our attention. The egg is used as a symbol of hope, where as the semi-circular form it seems to appear from, is symbolic of the womb. I generally like to introduce the element of the ‘Act’ in my works. Here, there is a disjunction or gap between immediate experience, and symbolic representations of this experience, by sitting down and being a part of this sculptural installation. On the whole the sculptural installation is specifically arranged in a manner where it invites its onlookers to sit down, and be a part of its being. This sculptural installation stands as a rhetorical monument, to our omnipresent urge to justify our being. It stands passively inviting us to participate in its non ending dialogues. It presents us with a comfortable opportunity to gaze at its being, to further understands its mysteries. Its heaviness gives away to a non-conforming lightness, as it seems to have confused its essence altogether. Its present absurd existence, I feel, is reminiscent of our human conditions. |
